The answer to  research question

I plan to answer research question by using techniques that are African influenced techniques such as punching, form folding, forging. I want to explore using different types of metals such as silver, brass, copper. I also want to explore with colour in my jewellery by using different types of metals i will get variety of colour and by using  texture on my metal it will give it a nice feel.

Africa

In my personal project I explored different things with my inspiration being Africa so everything i have done in my personal project was based on africa. the reason for me to choose Africa as my inspiration for my jewellery is that i connect with Africa its were i find my inner peace.what I am trying to achieve is to create jewellery that has an African feel to it and try to use techniques that are influenced by africa. my aim is to create jewellery that when you it know that it has some african feel on it somehow because i am very fond of Africa cause thta were my roots are.

Contemporary jewellery

Eric Loubser is inspired by the cute and pop genres in art and design. He works in precious and semi precious stone but also incorporate man made material such as enamel paint, pratteys putty, found objects etc his work is not meant to be taken "seriously" in a sense of of academic insight or deeper meaning,he does not try to create work that solely rely on its concept,it is mostly made to be enjoyed by bigger and more diverse audience,it is thre so that the viewer can make up his/her mind about the piece, it is is more what it will mean to them personally.

Final piece

I think the circus theme was very interesting one and having to designing  from it was very fun.from using circus tents as my inspiration was was quite interesting. the difficulties that i face in this project were soldering the different kinds of metals because the solder at different temperature and because i had many layers and next i need to pay more attention.

Design process

As i have used circus tents as my inspiration especially the top view, i took the circles that the tents makes when looking it from the top view and the different strips the tents has. then incorporated all those elements into my design process. most of my designing was done using Rhino drawing.

tents

I took circus tents as my inspiration because of the colour, strips and form. when you look at the colour of a circus tents they are very bright colours you will never see a dull circus tent that is what got me attracted and the layering of the different round forms and the pattern the strips makes.

the breastplate

This is a breastplate made out of wood, straws, beads, cotton its purpose is to protect when going to battle.

Fictional character

My story is based on a Red Indian warrior from the red Indians nation in America. The name of this warrior is Tolo, He is one of the greatest of warriors that has graced this earth, you could rely on him whenever you went to battle, he never back down on any challenge put upon his shoulders.
During the times of the wild wild west with the cowboys he was one warrior that the red Indians nation could put their hopes on whenever their went to battle they would come back victorious. He was well built on body physic he was tall, strong and very powerful. He was every general’s dream solider when going to battle.
When going to battle he was always on the frontline among the best warriors, as a warrior on the frontline one has to wear protective armour to enhance his survival chances. Tolo wore a protective breastplate to protect him when going into battle.
This breastplate was original made out of small animal’s bones and sew together with animal skin and beads. Every warrior would design and make his own breastplate the way he would like and the way he would suit him.
These breastplates were very strong armour because even a bullet would not go through this protective armour, so it was very ideal one to wear this breastplate whenever you called upon battle.
The Indians believed the breastplate was spiritual linked to their gods   and they believed that the gods would help them whenever they went to battle.
The breastplate was not only worn when going to battle it was also worn during rituals and big ceremonies the warriors would wear them when dancing.

These breastplate was a very valuable item among the Indians nation so it was important that every warrior would wear one.

Final piece

This is my final piece it entails the process which I have gone through, from the very beginning with my three jewels , that's where I got the ideal to go about tackling this kind project.

Experimenting with form folding

line folds

These folds produce raised lines  in flat sheet of metal that look like chased or constructed lines.
they may run across an entire surface or be restricted to a shorter strip. fold the metal where the line will be placed and mallet  the crease flat ,as figure A. the tighter the fold edge ,the sharper the resulting line will be. Anneal and open the  form with your fingers, then put it in roll mill to it flat.

Rueger fold

This is an extended forged line fold with a varying proportion of leg-to- fold edge. make a long line fold and mallet it tight. cut the metal on a curving line that angles away from the fold. this varying leg length creates a helix that results when the fold is hammered. the shorter the leg the, the greater the curvature.

Plunkett fold

Make a wedge t-fold in the vise , then with one side of the table in the vise ,tap the table up the slightly with a mallet. repeat on the other side of the table so that the end cross section resembles a y. close the upper arms of this Y and mallet it flat. roll the fold in a a narrow tapered end entering the mill first, when done , anneal the form and open it up.

form folding

Charles Lewton brain invented fold-forming,form-folding sheet metal quickly into wonderful 3-D shaper and textures, most  from single sheet of metal without any soldering. Fold forms while they can be used as finished products are at their best as starting point or component of more complex pieces.

Selina Campbell

She aspire to create three-dimensional forms that capture the beauty of flora and fauna and explore all  aspects of nature. She is greatly inspired by spontaneous layered structures and geometric patterns displayed in nature. She construct single floral components that are then arranged to produce exciting contemporary form, reminiscent of growing plant life.

Gilly Langton

Her philosophy is to make jewellery that is pure and uncomplicated. She is by simple forms, I create geometrical boxy shapes that are threaded through bold coloured elastic. The is used to contrast against the brushed silver creating playful pieces of jewellery, pulling and  pining the elastic. development within her jewellery is paramount, she continues to push her collection in new direction
,with the search for new techniques and material.

There is an inherent simplicity of both form and function in his work. All her designs, whatever the inspiration are translated into elegant pieces with subtle textures or more complex and layered finishes. Each  item is handcrafted by herself and thus the characteristics of all aspects of her work are under constant review. the result is an ever changing range of very wearable jewellery.
